ASBV's

In 2011 Stanley Vale began submitting data to MerinoSelect to obtain Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVS) on stud rams. ASBVs provide an estimate of a ram’s true genetic merit. Stanley Vale uses MerinoSelect ASBVs as another tool alongside traditional visual classing techniques in assessing our rams and to guide our breeding decisions. We have found ASBVs provide valuable information on our sheep as it is only the parts of an animal’s physical appearance that is due to its DNA that can be passed onto progeny. Our ASBVs are also a valuable benchmarking tool enabling us to compare our rams’ performance against all other Merino studs who participate in MerinoSelect. We are pleased to see that are rams are performing particularly well for fleece traits and we currently have trait leaders for fibre diameter, fibre diameter coefficient of variation and staple strength in our flock.
