Stanley Vale Merino Stud - News & Views

2016 Stanley Vale On-Property Sale

Our annual on-property sale is fast approaching so it's time to share a little bit more information about the sires whose progeny appear in our 2016 Sale Catalogue.

Our breeding goal is to increase fleece weights and body weights while maintaining the traditional wool style and micron sought by the Italian Spinners market. As such in recent years we have sought sires from new bloodlines, in addition to using homebred sires and sires from bloodlines proven to work in our stud.

We are particularly pleased by the impact of the Nerstane (N958) and Langdene (LD 07-4073), two sires used in our 2014 AI program.

The Langdene sire, the 2009 Australian Supreme Merino ram was chosen by Tim after he was impressed by some of his progeny at the Great Southern Supreme Show. His combination of large frame size while maintaining excellent wool quality has seen him perform well in the stud. His progeny are well grown with good body weights, good bone and increased fleece weights. Nerstane N958 is another big ram, weighing 160 kg. At 15 months of age his sons averaged 81kgs with some of the fleeces in the top 10% within the stud.

The Glenbrook sire used (GB3) is a trait leader for staple strength ASBV in the MerinoSelect analysis and his progeny also share this attribute. Two sons of Nerstane-090910, an impact sire we used a couple of years ago, are now in use as stud sires at Stanley Vale with pleasing results.

We were pleased by the feedback on our 2014 drop rams during the recent New England Merino Field Days with many visitors expressing their surprise at the size of the rams, all of whom were paddock reared.

We invite you to come and inspect our rams for yourself on Friday 5th February from 10am.
