Lamb slaughter rises again

AUSTRALIAN lamb slaughter for the 2014-15 fiscal year finished higher than previous years, while sheep slaughter declined.

Lamb slaughter for the year reached 22.87 million head, which is four per cent higher than the previous year, and 15pc above the five-year average, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Following what was historically high lamb slaughter in 2013-14, the large number of lambs that continued to enter the market, during the latter half of 2014-15 in particular, indicates a considerable improvement in lamb marking rates in recent years, according to MLA.

New market access for animal genetics

AUSTRALIAN producers can now export a wider range of animal genetic material to Chile, Colombia and Mexico, after the Australian government successfully negotiated new health protocols with each nation.

Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce said it was an important result for Australian genetic exporters in a growing global market.

“Australian exporters can now send sheep and goat semen and embryos to Colombia, and bovine semen to Chile—meaning our producers can now export all the major categories of ruminant genetics (cattle, sheep and goat semen and embryos) to both these markets," he said.

Graziers skill-up to manage wild dog problem

Updated August 18, 2015 12:27:04

Sheep graziers in the central west of New South Wales are celebrating their success in controlling problem wild dogs in their region.

The growing number of wild dog attacks are said to be contributing to the drop in the national sheep flock, with graziers suggesting that the financial cost and the emotional toil of stock losses have made sheep production unsustainable in some areas.

The New Black

PIP COURTNEY, PRESENTER: There's a reason the term "black sheep of the family" means outcast, for in the wool industry, a black or brown sheep in the flock is rarely welcomed. But while most woolgrowers aim for snowy white fleece, there's a small core group breeding coloured sheep in varying shades of grey, brown and black. They mostly service the rekindled interest in handcrafts. But as Prue Adams found, the breeders of black and coloured sheep are not always embraced by the wider wool community.

HELEN WRIGHT, COLOURED WOOL PRODUCER: I trained as a professional wool classer, so I was travelling over Victoria and into New South Wales classing and I had friends that were craftspeople and they'd say to me, "Oh, you'll see a nice coloured fleece in the flock you're doing. Will you see if you can buy it for us?" So I'd bring wool home and take money back. But my father actually said to me at one stage, "Well you're not making any money out of this. You might as well have a few of them."

PRUE ADAMS, REPORTER: Helen Wright grew up on this Victorian property between Ararat and Avoca. Her parents ran merinos - white merinos. In the early 1980s, the young wool classer was surprised when her father allowed her to bring coloured sheep onto the place. It was a move that sparked a passion that would last a lifetime.

More work to be done on lamb survival rates

Updated August 19, 2015 17:08:55

Lamb mortality rates are a major cost to the Australia's wool and sheepmeat industries and researchers say graziers need to fine tune their operations to increase lamb survival.

Cold and wet winter weather in recent days has seen sheep graziers warnings from the weather bureau and cold conditions are certainly implicated in lamb deaths.

Setting the farming record straight

Updated August 11, 2015 13:15:25

It is up to the people on the land to stand up and take responsibility for the disconnect between consumers and agriculture, to secure the future of domestic food and fibre production.
