'Age of reason' threatened: Anderson

FORMER deputy prime minister John Anderson has lamented what he says is the hypocrisy and blatant disregard of evidence-based decision making in public and political debate on issues like energy resources and agricultural biotechnology.

“It’s hard to know where to start and it’s hard to not become cynical and even depressed about it,” he told Fairfax Media.

“I say that because the debate has become so stymied, it’s so irrational and it’s so hard to get people’s focus away from themselves and their perceived needs and onto the really big issues of a fair go for everyone on the planet.

Butchers sharpen up for TriNations

AUSTRALIA'S top butchers sharpened their skills in Queensland this week ahead of the TriNations international butchery competition in September.

The team of six butchers from across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, converged on Helensvale for its last training session.

Captain, Michael James, from Carina North Quality Meats in Queensland, is taking on the role for the third year and said competition was set to be fierce when Australia, Great Britain and New Zealand go head-to-head in Auckland in September.

High marks for lamb numbers

THE season in Broken Hill is ticking along, with most pastoralists looking to the skies for pasture-finishing rain.

Pastoralists Association of West Darling president Chris Wilhelm said country north of Broken Hill was generally in good health, with plenty of surface water captured, but south of the Barrier Highway it was a different story.

"We didn't get as much rain and it's getting very low on surface water," he said.

Wellard joint venture takes beef to China

AUSTRALIA is poised to be a major supplier of cattle to China.

That's the clear message Wellard Rural Exports is sending, after last week announcing its joint venture with private Chinese company, the Fulida Group.

Wellard, Australia's largest livestock exporter, will supply and market Australian cattle and beef into China, develop import feedlot and slaughter quarantine facilities, feedlots and an abattoir to facilitate live cattle trade in China.

New China-backed wool buyer named

A NEW name has appeared in buyers lists at Perth, Melbourne and Sydney Australian Wool Exchange (AWEX) auction centres.

While the name is new, team members behind Global Wool Export (Australia) Pty Ltd are old hands at wool trading.

They started from nothing once before and grew the business into a major wool trader.

Dairy passion scoops title for Jake

A PASSION for the industry has given Jake Connor, Nangkita, the title SA Young Dairyfarmer of the Year.

Mr Connor, 22, who operates a 550-cow dairy with his parents and siblings, said the win was an honour that reflected his interest in the dairy industry.

"I feel that it is a wonderful industry to be involved in with huge opportunities," he said.

NSW cropping season kicking along after more July rain

Average or better than average rainfall in July across most of the state has provided many farmers in New South Wales with an excellent winter cropping season.

Department of Primary Industries (DPI) seasonal conditions co-ordinator Ian McGowen says the outlook has improved.

"The Bureau is forecasting a higher chance of wetter than normal conditions in the early spring and cooler than average temperatures," he said.

An inquiry into halal certification is not warranted but could be useful in eradicating myths, says Australia's leading body for packaged food.

Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) is presenting at a Senate inquiry, which began today, exploring third party certification schemes, including organic, kosher and genetically modified products.

Ridley profit lifts 20pc

ANIMAL nutrition company Ridley has recorded a 20 per cent lift in profits for the 2014-2015 fiscal year.

In its fiscal year results announced today, Ridley reports earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) of $35.2 million, an increase of $6.3m on the $28.9m for the previous fiscal year.

It recorded consolidated profit after tax of $21.2m, an increase of $3.6m on the previous year.
