Costs and Returns involved in seedstock breeding

Invitation to participate in an important industry project

The Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit (AGBU) has obtained MLA support for a project aimed at collecting objective data on the costs and returns involved in seedstock breeding in sheep and beef cattle.

Project Summary

Genetic improvement of the Australian sheep flock and beef herd requires investment by stud producers in performance recording. Greater penetration of performance recording in the stud industry will have long lasting impacts on commercial producers’ profitability.  This project will survey ram and bull producers to define the costs of producing rams and bulls and the costs of undertaking performance recording as well as profitability of such operations.  This data will be used to determine the capacity of ram and bull producers to scale up investment in recording, and so provides a critical resource of underpinning information for industry strategy for genetic improvement.

The attached letter is an invitation to participate in the project, including details of how to do so.

We would welcome your involvement.
